Care that reaches the source

Tooth pain usually comes from deeper than you can see.

When the inside of a tooth, the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected from deep decay, a crack, or trauma, the tooth can throb, ache, or feel sensitive to anything hot or cold. A root canal takes the pressure off, cleans out what's irritating the nerve, and seals the tooth back up. At Marlborough Dental Partners, root canal treatment isn't a once-in-a-while add-on. It's what our team focuses on day in and day out, which is why so many patients in pain are sent our way by their own dentists.

What to expect

A calm, predictable visit from start to finish.

We'll walk you through every step before we do it. No surprises, no rushing, no jargon.

  1. 01

    Evaluation

We listen to your symptoms, take a digital x-ray, and test the tooth to confirm a root canal is the right step.

  2. 02

    Numbing and comfort

Local anesthetic fully numbs the area. Most patients say it felt no different than having a filling placed.

  3. 03

    Cleaning the canals

Using small modern instruments, we gently remove the inflamed tissue, then shape and disinfect the inside of the tooth.

  4. 04

    Sealing the tooth

The canals are sealed to keep bacteria out and a temporary filling protects the tooth until your final restoration.

  5. 05

    Final restoration

A permanent filling and, in most cases, a crown finishes the job so your tooth can handle chewing for years.

FAQ

Common questions about root canals.

Ask us a question
Does a root canal hurt?

A root canal is the treatment that stops the pain you're already feeling. With modern anesthetic the area is fully numb, and most patients say the visit feels similar to having a filling. Mild tenderness for a few days afterward is normal and usually responds well to over-the-counter ibuprofen.

How long does the appointment take?

Most root canals are finished in a single visit of about 60 to 90 minutes depending on the tooth and how much infection is present.

Is saving the tooth really better than pulling it?

In almost every case, yes. Keeping your natural tooth protects your bite, your jaw bone, and the teeth on either side. A root canal lets the tooth stay in place while we clear out the infection, which is usually simpler and less expensive in the long run than an extraction plus an implant or bridge.

What happens if I leave an infected tooth alone?

Tooth infections do not heal on their own. The infection can spread into the surrounding bone and tissue, cause increasing pain and swelling, and may eventually mean losing the tooth. Treating it early with a root canal is the most reliable way to protect your overall oral health.

When do I need to be seen urgently?

Call us right away if you have severe tooth pain, swelling in the gums or face, pain that worsens when you bite, a fever, or a visible bump on the gum. These can be signs of an active infection that needs prompt treatment.

Will I need a crown afterward?

Most back teeth need a crown after a root canal to protect them from cracking under chewing pressure. Some front teeth can be restored with just a filling. We'll go over the right plan for your tooth before treatment starts.

Is root canal treatment covered by insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of root canal treatment. We'll review your benefits, give you a clear estimate before we start, and walk through financing options like CareCredit, Cherry, and HFD if you'd like to spread the cost out.

Do you treat patients referred by another dentist?

Yes. We work closely with referring dentists in Marlborough and the surrounding towns. Send us your records and imaging and we'll coordinate care so your dentist stays in the loop the whole way through.
